DESCRIPTION:
Irregularly spheroidal or compressed-spheroidal, 5~8 mm in diameter. Externally red, purplish-red or dull red, shunken, oily, with soft pulp, sometimes externally blackish-red or covered with “white frost”, Seeds1~2, reniform, externally brownish-yellow, lustrous, testa thin and fragile. Odour of pulp, slight; taste, sour. Odour of seeds, aromatic on crushing; taste pungent and slightly bitter.
ACTION:
To arrest discharges, replenish qi, promote fluid secretion, tonify the kidney, and induce sedation.
INDICATIONS:
Chronic cough and asthma; nocturnal emission, spermatorrhea; enuresis, frequent urination; protracted diarrhea; spontaneous sweating, night sweating; impairment of body fluid with thirst, shortness of breath and feeble pulse; diabetes caused by internal heat; palpitation and insomnia.
REFERENTIAL ADVICE:
1. Astringing the lung and nourishing the kidney.
It is usually prescribed for patients with persistent cough and asthma of insufficiency type.
2. Astringing seminal emission and diarrhea.
It is used in the treatment of spermatorrhoea, protracted diarrhea, enuresis and frequent micturition. It is also prescribed for patients with diarrhea before dawn due to cold of insufficiency type of the spleen and kidney.
3. Producing the body fluid and arresting sweating.
It is used in the treatment of spontaneous perspiration, night sweat, thirst due to impairment of body fluid, palpitation and insomnia.
TIPS:
It is both astringent and demulcent, depending on the condition of the patient’s fluid balance: in cases of fluid excess, it dries; in cases of fluid deficiency, it moistens.
