Harlequin Glorybower Leaf and Twig
Origin
The herb consists of the slender twigs and leaves of a decidous shrub or short tree. Clerodendron trichotomum Thumb.(family Verbenaceae). The crude herb is for use.
Distribution
It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Jiangsu, Shangdong, Anhui.
Nature and Affinity
The drug is bitter in taste, cold in nature, and distributed to the Liver and Urinary Bladder Channels.

Actions and Indications:
Dispelling wind-damp.
To treat disorder of movement of tendons and muscles of limbs due to wind and dampness or hemiplegia caused by wind stroke, it can be used with Herba Siegesbeckiae in pills; to treat general itching caused by wind evil, it can be decocted as a wash. Besides, the herb has the effect on lowering the blood pressure, so it can be powdered and taken a long time, or decocted as an ingredient in a prescription for treating hypertension due to hyperactivity of liver-Yang marked by vertigo and headache. It is not suitable to be decocted for a long time at high temperature with violent fire; otherwise, its anti-hypertension effect will be weakened.
ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE
6-9g of the herb are decocted as a dose in decoction; 3g of its powder are used as a dose; and a proper amount, for local application.

REMARKS
The herb effectively lowers blood pressure if the tender leaves are picked before the flowers bloom; they should be brewed briefly over low heat; the roots are also used to lower blood pressure.
