DESCRIPTION:
Stems cylindrical, 30-100cm long, 2-5mm in diameter; externally yellowish-brown or yellowish-green, sometimes purplish, with distinct nodes and longitudinal ridges; texture fragile, fracture white or hollowed in pith. Leaves opposite, petioled, lamina mostly crumpled and broken, greenish-brown; the entire ones trifid or not divided, the middle segments of trifid ones relatively large, when whole, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, base narrow, margin serrate; the not-divided ones, when whole, ovate, ovate-lanceolate or elliptical. Odour, aromatic; taste, slightly bitter.
ACTION:
To resolve damp, invigorate the function of the spleen and improve appetite by its spicy fragrance, and to expel summer heat from the body surface.
INDICATIONS:
Accumulation of damp in the spleen and stomach marked by stuffiness in the epigastrium, nausea, sweet taste and sticky sensation in the mouth, foul breach and salivation; affection by summer heat and damp marked by sensation of distension in the head and stuffiness in the chest.
REFERENTIAL ADVICE:
Resolving dampness and clearing away summer-heat, invigorating the Spleen and regulating middle Jiao.
To treat stuffiness of the chest and distension of the abdomen accompanied with sweet taste in the mouth, foul smell and sticky tongue coating, etc. (due to invasion of middle Jiao by dampness), it is often used with Herba Agastachis, Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatae, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, etc.; to treat fever and headache, stuffiness of the chest and poor appetite due to summer-heat in summer, with Herba Agastachis, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, Folium Nelumbinis, etc.
