E-Jiao (Donkey-hide gelatin) is boiled down from the hide of donkey after removing its fur. Other processing procedures are also necessary. E-Jiao enjoys a history of more than two thousand years. It is commonly believed that the producing area and its name are concerned with Dong-E County of Shandong Province. An ancient book named ‘Shui Jing Zhu ‘ recorded that there was a big well in Dong-E. With the depth of 6-7 Zhangs (about 22 meters), its water was used to boil down glue early which was recorded as ‘E-Jiao’. The well was called ‘E-Jing’ (Jing means well in Chinese). Another Chinese ancient physician Hong Jing Said, ‘It is from Dong-E, so called E-Jiao’. The earliest record of its therapeutic effect was written in ‘Shengnong’s Herbal Classic’, which classified it as ‘first rate’. The main function of E-Jiao can be summed up as following: nourishing yin (good at women, especially when they abort.), resolving phlegm and removing heat form lung. It can cure deficiency of blood, cough due to conniption, bleeding form the eyes, ears, mouth or subcutaneous tissues, irregularity of menstruation and metrorrhagia during pregnancy etc. The clinical effects are very satisfactory. The research has proved that E-Jiao contains calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, minerals and 18 kinds of amino acids. Many of them are essential for human-body, but cannot be synthesized in body.
